What is this trial about?

This trial is your opportunity to make a powerful statement to beverage companies. It's your chance to let them know what drinks you'd prefer to see sold in refillable containers in the future, rather than the 'single-use - high emission' packaging that often ends up in recycling or landfill. Your input can influence drink brands to make more environmentally responsible packaging choices. Join us in shaping a greener and more sustainable future for all.

Why should we participate?

In Auckland, we collectively consume nearly 1 billion beverage containers each year, but shockingly, less than 1% of these are currently being reused. While recycling is a commendable effort, it's crucial to acknowledge its associated carbon emissions. The good news is that reusing beverage containers can be up to 20 times more environmentally friendly.

Your participation sends a powerful and positive message to companies that may not yet recognize the urgency of making better choices now, rather than in 10 or 20 years. Let's work together to reduce our reliance on recycling and shift towards more sustainable practices. Your involvement can make a meaningful impact in the here and now. Help us recycle less and reuse more, for a brighter and greener future.

To say thank you for participating in our trial and/or survey, you can choose to be entered into a prize draw of delicious drinks, kindly donated by our trial sponsors. Employees and direct family of Waste Solutions (Auckland Council), Green Bottle and the trial sponsors are welcome to participate in the trial but are not eligible for prizes.

When did the trial start?

The trial is kicking off on 18 October 2023 (Reusable Wednesday) in alignment with Recycling Week, and runs throughout the entire month of November 2023. This is your chance to be part of our sustainability initiative, making a difference in your community. Join us in promoting reuse and reducing waste. Learn more and participate today!

Who is allowed to participate?

We welcome participation from anyone in the wider Auckland region, so have come up with a number of options:

  • If you're within a 7km radius of the Western Springs Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre, we can conveniently deliver a crate directly to your home, but you must pre-register via the Drink Different website by 30 November 2023 . Registrations received after this date will be required to pick up their crate at the Waiorea Community Recycling Centre during opening hours.
  • If you live outside this area you have the option to pick up a crate from the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre from 2 November 2023.

Fill your crate with the beverage bottles and/or cans you'd like to see reused in the future, and join our sustainability initiative.

Don't forget, anyone in the wider Auckland region can also participate via a quick 2-minute online survey.

How long does the trial last?

The trial will take place throughout November 2023, with specific phases as follows:

Can I have more than one crate?

What happens if I don't drop my crate back?
