CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION

As Construction and Demolition waste is a source of commercial waste, the council has limited influence over the construction industry’s behaviour of managing it. However, there is an opportunity to work with large-scale developers to support Construction and Demolition waste diversion through wider uptake of deconstruction methods instead of demolition, and facilitating the recycle and reuse of materials.

CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION

Construction waste matters

Waste from construction and demolition holds the greatest potential for waste minimisation partly because it is the biggest source of materials going to landfill. Find out what Auckland Council is doing on it's journey to zero waste by 2040.

Together with the construction industry we will reduce waste to landfill.

Zero waste deconstruction

Deconstruction is a major game changer for our path to zero waste. Construction and demolition are the largest source of waste to landfill. Deconstruction is something not a lot of people in the industry do because they think it eats away at your profits, so they prefer to just demolish a site and move on.

C & D waste case studies

Learn about how Auckland Council is changing its approach to demolish a construction site, not the environment.

Auckland produced 568,935 tonnes of construction and demolition waste. That is the equivalent of 196 Auckland town Halls filled to the brim with waste and stacked on top of each other.

This is an issue we want to tackle head on.
