COMPOSTING

Did you know x% of what Aucklanders throw away at the kerb is valuable organic material? Sending garden clippings and food scraps to landfill wastes resources that could return nutrients to the soil around your garden, house plants or in your local community. In landfill the potential of the material is wasted, and they also produce methane - a potent greenhouse gas.

Composting is a simple way to give scraps like vegetable peels, egg shells, coffee grounds and lawn clippings a second life in your home while also supporting healthy soils (to grow more). It’s simpler than you might think, and could save you a trip to the garden centre.

What you can do

  • Give composting a go, or try again if you’ve got an old forgotten bin in the corner of the garden.
  • Choose a system that suits your lifestyle (each method has its own benefits).
  • Learn about the simple ratio of materials to make good compost and avoid smells.
  • Pest-proof your bin to avoid unwanted visitors.

Zero waste reinforcement

Auckland’s aspirational goal of Zero Waste by 2040 means moving towards circular systems, keeping resources in use for as long as possible. Composting at home is a way of putting nutrients back into the land you live on, where it can continue to feed and nourish in an infinite cycle.
